President Obama gives himself B+ on Oprah Interview. What grade would you give him?
I think a B+ is pretty good, though I would like to see more on the LGBT and Healthcare front

What is up with this guy?! Who is paying him off? I mean seriously, why doesn't he just switch to the Republican party already.

Sigh, I knew he was going to be trouble after he was re-elected in 2006, but I never thought he would become *this* bad.

Personal Statement Dec. 13th, 2009 @ 04:30 pm
[info]lstwin, posting in [info]law_students
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

When you all started writing your personal statements, how did you determine what you were going to write about? I've tried reading books on how to write a personal statement, but after reading 6 books filled with examples, I still have no idea what to write about.

At first I thought I would write about the 6 months that I spent in Israel after college, where I lived on a kibbutz and participated in a program called Kibbutz Ulpan. While participating in the program, I spent 3 days each week studying Hebrew and 3 days each week working, first as a janitor at the kibbutz's amusement park, and later in the dining hall; I also spent a week in the army in a program called Gadna. I thought that writing about some aspect of my time in Israel would make for interesting and entertaining personal statement, but 1) I don't want it to sound like a travel log, and 2) I have no idea what to focus on or where to go with the story.

I also considered writing about losing my mom to cancer (she died in May 2008), but 1) I'm not sure that's a very unique topic, and 2) I'm afraid that that topic would be more about mom than it would be about me.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am at a complete loss as to where to go with my statement, and if anyone can give me some good advice, it would be you guys.

Thanks in advance!

Currently Applying Dec. 13th, 2009 @ 04:10 pm

Hello Everyone.

I am currently in the process of applying to law school. I have about 7 schools that I intend on applying to. Both my LSAT score and GPA are at or above, mostly above, the median if not 75th percentile for these schools. Still, every time I go to fill out the applications or work on my personal statement I freak myself out and quit. I know my scores are good enough to get into law school, but all of the other factors which I have more control over (my personal statement and resume) I feel as though I'm going to mess it up and ruin my chances. All I hear about it how difficult it is to get into law school and even though I know I am qualified, I still doubt myself. Did anyone else have this feeling, or can I quit doubting myself and be reasonably confident that I will be accepted to at least ONE school?

I know some may be thinking that if I can't handle the stress of applying to these schools I'll never make it through law school, but once I get an acceptance letter I'll be fine. There's just so much riding on these applications!

Not your usual post...slightly OT? Dec. 12th, 2009 @ 02:16 pm

This is somewhat OT, so if you feel it needs to be deleted let me know. I'm hoping someone here will have some input. I'm not the recent new grad - my husband is.

My husband is a new lawyer, just graduated in may, bar in july, found out he passed in October and started his first job 11/2. For Christmas, I'd like to get him a PDA and load it with legal resources. I think that would be a good, lawyery-tool and he would have fun with it. But I did a really good of being in denial when he was in law school, and have managed to make myself completely clueless about what kind of resources he could need or want on a PDA. So, current law students and recent grads - what would YOU find helpful? Y'all are probably a lot more in the know than I am.

Any input would be sincerely appreciated.

Letters of Recomendation Dec. 11th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm

I applied to law school in 2005 and didn't make the cut, so I have decided to try again since everything I have accomplished is more impressive now.

However, there is one problem. My best LOR is from the dept. head of my major and she also happens to be a graduate of the law school I am applying to. She wrote me a WONDERFUL letter in 2005 and since then she is MIA. Can I use this LOR this time around too or does that look bad?

A new show about BigLaw...

source

I'm not sure I could ever watch this show because of the fact I'm in law school... and I worked in a BigLaw firm for two years and this just not how things operate. Just like my Mom can't stand things that happen on medical shows because she's a nurse. Everything in BigLaw is a lot more subtle -- if someone is sleeping with another staff member, it's not out in the open like that. And partners don't say things like, "I'm litigation partner, so I'll do what I want" - it's more a silent power struggle. But since that doesn't make good television, I knowww.

I hate how in the intro they have the characters explain they want to change the world. You're not going to f-in do that in biglaw, get a grip. I also hate how all the shows about practicing law are all about biglaw, and there's none about public interest law. I know I'm biased but I think that would make a great show. I hate it when everyone assumes that because I am going to be a lawyer I'm going to make a lot of money -- NOT THE CASE. And it's so awkward to have to explain that I'm actually going to be a very poor lawyer. They struggle to even believe this...

Anyways the best thing about this I think is Tina Majorino is a major character! She was the little girl in Waterworld, Corina Corina, When a Man Loves a Woman. Her IMDB profile is here. She's playing the Addy Fischer character.

Of course, Above the Law has their own thoughts, mainly stemming from the fact that Billy Zane's character should be overweight.

Pacific Rescue Plan. Dec. 11th, 2009 @ 04:04 pm

Pacific PlanEven before the plans of establishment a free Sunland settlement on one of the Pacific Islands were declared, a large-scale strategic document - "The Pacific Plan of freedom and development" has been proposed for discussion of all interested countries, organizations and individuals. But the challenges to the Pacific island countries are so threatening, that it would be more correct speak about the plan of salvation.

We primarily mean the global warming environmental threat and rising of sea level because of it. Most Pacific countries actually threatened with extinction under the Ocean waters in the coming decades, may be in years. The entire population of such countries as the Republic of Kiribati etc. is already preparing to become environmental refugees. The problem of possible flooding is the primary problem of island states.

We can not say that this problem is outside international attention. In December 2009 Copenhagen hosts the Cop-15 international conference under the auspices of the UN. 110 Heads of States and Governments from over the world gathered in order to solve the problem of effective counteract global climate change. The main conference goal is the adoption a new agreement, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. The new agreement will set commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases the largest developing countries (China, Brazil, and India) and the United States.

The participants intend to come to agreement on the establishment of a global fund to combat climate change. China and islands developing States believe that the developed countries are obliged to give $ 200 billion in aid to the fight against climate change. The disagreement consists in the fact that the rich world, led by the United States,

Why is it rumored to be difficult to transfer to a top law school? Dec. 9th, 2009 @ 01:13 pm
[info]solbrite, posting in [info]law_students
My LSAT is a 154 and my UGPA is 3.6. I might attend a lower ranked school and then try to transfer to a higher ranked school. It is not impossible, but I hear it is rather difficult. Why is that?

Re-taking is not an option for me.
